We are hosting a celebration of Advent and Christmas this Sunday evening, 6 December 2015 at 7.30, in the presence of Bishop John and the Bishop of Manchester, David Walker. The event consists of readings and music to help prepare for Christmas, with congregational hymns and carols, choral music from two choirs — ourselves and the excellent Notability — and pieces for organ from the equally excellent Anthony Hunt. There will also be speakers from the two charities the event is supporting: Caritas Diocese of Salford and Salford Loaves and Fishes. Tickets are £5, and may be bought in advance from www.ticketline.com or 0161 737 8775, or at the door. We hope to see you there!
This is a record of musical activities at St John's Cathedral, Salford from 2009 - 2018 under our previous Director of Music, Martin Barry. Please visit www.salfordcathedral.co.uk for more information about the current work of the Cathedral Music Department.

The Gospel of the widow's mite prompted some musical reflections on the poor, both in the final hymn paraphrasing the Magnificat, and in the refrain of our Communion processional song:
Here in the Bread that is broken,
Here in the Cup that is poured,
Here in the Word that is spoken,
Jesus Christ is Lord.
Here, where the poor find their treasure,
Here, where the greatest are least,
Come, find a love beyond measure
In this heavenly feast.
